Objective
After twenty years of running the business successfully with SAP’s legacy ERP, it was about time for badenova to modernize its system landscape. The objective was to migrate to SAP S/4HANA as the new platform. At the same time, the company planned to separate its energy industry-specific processes based on SAP Industry Solutions for Utilities (SAP IS-U) from those of logistics and finance of the core areas. Furthermore, adjustments to the SAP organizational structure such as the breakdown of controlling areas were added to the transformation scope. Overall, the new ERP environment was designed to be easily integrated with additional IT systems and to serve as the foundation for future digitalization initiatives. To achieve this, badenova partnered with Natuvion and Nagarro.

Detailed project overview
Large data volumes, running SAP IS-U in parallel, and complex legacy structures
Migrating the legacy system with its large data volume while running the SAP IS-U in parallel was challenging. For badenova, it was clear even before the project began that an initiative of this scale requires an experienced migration partner to execute. badenova found the necessary expertise with the Digital Engineering Experts at Nagarro and their partner Natuvion.
Georg Klein, IT Project Manager at badenova, confirms: “Complex transformation processes require a smart and technology-savvy approach. This is why we chose Nagarro and Natuvion, as both demonstrate exceptional strength in this respect.”
Combined expertise for a controlled transformation
Natuvion and Nagarro jointly developed a detailed implementation concept for the transformation. The first step was to separate the processes, functions, and data of the SAP IS-U system from those of the ERP core, making the extensive data landscape easier to manage. The IS-U data stayed in the source system, while the data required for SAP S/4HANA was transferred from the SAP ECC system.
For the migration, the project team used a Selective Data Transition approach, enabling a gradual transfer of the data landscape into the new system environment. This approach ensured that badenova’s ongoing business operations were barely affected during the transformation.
To support the selective data transfer, the project team created a dedicated system “shell” based on the existing productive system, into which only the data required to work in the new system was migrated. The Natuvion Data Conversion Suite (DCS) was used to ensure a reliable and efficient data transfer.
The migration was also used as an opportunity to clean up master data, eliminating inconsistencies and redundancies. In addition, the project included the separation of controlling areas within the new ERP solution and the optimization of the profit center structures.
Successful go-live: SAP S/4HANA as the new ERP foundation.
After 21 months and four test migrations, the ERP modernization project execution concluded with a final dress rehearsal and cutover. Since May 13, 2024, badenova has been live on SAP S/4HANA. SAP’s modular architecture allows badenova IT to extend the landscape in the future with solutions such as SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) to further capitalize on its potential.
With such a functional and data-optimized ERP system as an excellent foundation, the business can proceed with further digitalization.
Nagarro and Natuvion were both instrumental in our efforts to take our IT infrastructure to another level. It is now the basis for new and fexible business processes, and optimized customer service. Twenty years of historically grown structures and the challenging data situation could not stop the team from finishing strong. We experienced a great collaboration. Professionalism, partnership mentality, and thorough planning resulted in a smooth transformation
