Complex carve-out with an ambitious timeline
The initial situation was shaped by several critical factors. West Burton Energy needed to separate its data from an existing centralized SAP ECC landscape while simultaneously migrating it into a newly established SAP S/4HANA environment. This carve-out scenario required the precise selection, extraction, and transformation of relevant business data without disrupting ongoing operations.
In addition, the highly ambitious project timeline of only six months represented a significant challenge. Beyond the technical migration itself, extensive preparatory work was required, including the redesign of data structures, integration of new master data models, and adaptation of finance and logistics processes. At the same time, internal resources and specialized expertise for executing such a large-scale transformation project were limited, increasing the need for an experienced transformation partner and proven migration methodology.
Ready for take-off: executing the transformation
To implement the migration, Xmateria relied on the Data Conversion Suite, enabling a structured and largely automated transformation process. In the first step, all relevant data was extracted from the SAP ECC system and prepared for migration. This was followed by the phased transformation of the data in accordance with SAP S/4HANA requirements.
Key activities included the migration of financial data into the new General Ledger, the implementation of Customer Vendor Integration (CVI) to support the Business Partner model, and the migration of Asset Accounting alongside additional finance and logistics data. The transformation also included a currency conversion as part of the overall migration scope.
The migration followed a Selective Data Transition approach, ensuring that only relevant and required data was transferred into the new system environment. Throughout the project, Xmateria was supported by Natuvion’s transformation experts, who provided both technical and methodological guidance as well as dedicated training sessions. Multiple test migrations and a comprehensive dress rehearsal ensured that the final go-live could be executed smoothly and with minimal operational risk.
Selective data transition in record time
By combining the Natuvion Data Conversion Suite with a clearly structured migration methodology, West Burton Energy successfully completed the transformation within an exceptionally short timeframe. The selected company code, including all required preparatory activities, was migrated from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA in just six months.
Automated migration processes and close collaboration between all project stakeholders enabled an efficient implementation while maintaining a consistently high level of quality.
Today, West Burton Energy operates a modern, high-performance SAP landscape designed to support future business requirements and ongoing digital transformation initiatives. At the same time, the project established a reusable framework for future transformation programs, allowing the implemented methodologies and tools to be leveraged in subsequent projects.
