Objective
When the EnBW Group decided to transform its ERP system to SAP S/4HANA and introduce a centralized platform, its subsidiaries were given the opportunity to join the transformation initiative. EnBW ODR took this opportunity to migrate to the new central platform as well. The objective was to map the company’s existing business processes – ranging from finance and controlling to procurement and technical areas such as maintenance, construction, and grid connection management – onto the new SAP S/4HANA platform.
As a large proportion of employees worked directly with the existing ERP system, the platform migration needed to be implemented in a structured and transparent manner while minimizing the impact on day-to-day operations. To ensure a smooth and timely transition, EnBW ODR chose to engage the experienced project managers from Natuvion, with whom successful collaborations had already been established in the past.

Detailed project overview
Many stakeholders, one goal: the path to the central SAP S/4HANA platform
The migration to the central SAP S/4HANA platform represented a complex large-scale project for EnBW ODR. On the one hand, the platform migration had to be integrated into the group-wide transformation program sCORE25. On the other hand, numerous company-specific processes at EnBW ODR needed to be considered, as they could not be mapped directly within the central platform.
In addition, many business units and employees were affected by the changes, making close coordination, clear communication, and structured project governance essential. At the same time, effort and budget estimations had to be prepared, a realistic project timeline defined, and suitable project structures established. The project schedule was ambitious: following the project launch in April 2020, the go-live was planned for December 2021.
Hand in hand: project management & Data Quality Management
To successfully meet these requirements, Natuvion’s project management team established clear project structures at an early stage and supported EnBW ODR in setting up an internal project framework. This included regular project status meetings, transparent communication structures, and the implementation of Jira as the central project management tool for steering and tracking tasks and project progress. At the same time, Natuvion assumed a key role in coordinating between the internal ODR project and the overarching corporate program sCORE25.
The project was executed using a hybrid project management approach: a traditional steering committee ensured strategic governance and decision-making, while operational tasks were organized in three-week agile sprint cycles.
In addition to organizational project management, Natuvion also took on key responsibilities in the area of Data Quality Management. As part of the SAP S/4HANA implementation, the master data concept was redesigned, with business partners replacing traditional customers and vendors as the central element of master data management. Natuvion supported EnBW ODR in analyzing existing processes, aligning them with the requirements of the corporate transformation program, and developing a suitable business partner concept.
Furthermore, the team coordinated workshops and alignment sessions between the corporate group and the subsidiary, while also supporting the organizational integration of the new data processes through training sessions, workshops, and post-go-live support.
A perfectly timed go-live
Thanks to clearly structured project processes and the close collaboration of all stakeholders involved, the platform migration was successfully completed. By the planned go-live date in December 2021, all business-critical processes at EnBW ODR were fully operational on the new central SAP S/4HANA platform.
Throughout the project duration, the project management team coordinated around 40 project participants, managed approximately 2,500 Jira tickets, and oversaw a total of 25 sprint cycles as well as around 40 steering committee meetings and thematic deep-dive workshops.
The structured project approach ensured that both the requirements of the corporate group and the specific needs of EnBW ODR were fully addressed. This created the foundation for the stable operation of the new platform and for future joint transformation initiatives.
Large, complex projects are not for everyone. Introducing structure and staying effective is what Natuvion project management sets apart. With competence and always operating at the highest level Natuvion makes the difference being the trusted partner for all SAP S/4HANA and topics which needed attention such as Data Quality Management.
