Objective
Following several acquisitions, NRG Energy aimed to establish a stable, high-performance, and consolidated system landscape. The existing National Retail Platform was to be modernized and migrated to a future-ready technological foundation. To achieve this, the company planned the migration from an Oracle database to a Suite on HANA database, consolidating all customer activities into a single centralized instance. In addition to increasing operational efficiency and creating synergies, a key objective was the substantial reduction of the rapidly growing database size in order to sustainably improve overall system performance.

High complexity under strict time and availability constraints
The implementation of this initiative presented NRG Energy with significant challenges. In particular, the combination of extremely large data volumes, a complex system landscape, and stringent timeline requirements placed considerable pressure on the project. At the same time, uninterrupted business operations for millions of customers had to be ensured throughout the migration process. Compliance with contractual obligations under a Transition Services Agreement (TSA) further intensified the demands regarding timing, precision, and execution reliability.
Step-by-step toward a seamless migration
To address these complex requirements, NRG Energy partnered with Natuvion and adopted a near-zero downtime approach powered by the Natuvion Data Conversion Suite (Natuvion DCS). Thanks to the solution’s high degree of automation, large data volumes could be processed efficiently while accelerating typical transformation activities. During system runtime, the migration was prepared using the SAP Database Migration Option (DMO). During the actual downtime window, specialized procedures such as trigger-based data synchronization, data classification, and waving mechanisms were applied. This approach was complemented by multiple testing and validation phases, including a full-scale rehearsal, enabling risks to be identified early and ensuring optimal preparation for the final migration.
Successful migration with only 13 hours of downtime
The project was successfully delivered and exceeded the original expectations. All data was migrated completely and securely with minimal impact on ongoing business operations. Particularly noteworthy was the significant reduction of the planned downtime, as well as the substantial decrease in database size. As a result, not only was overall system performance improved, but a scalable and future-proof IT landscape was established to effectively support continued business growth.
Th e proposed 18-hour downtime was already very ambitious and we were really impressed that Natuvion achieved the migration even faster than planned. Th e migration and smaller database will definitely help our business performance while supporting our growth and M&A plans going forward.
