Global wave-based system transformation
The transformation initiative presented BMW Group with several major challenges. With more than 30 TB of data, the existing SAP ECC system had reached its operational limits and needed to be fully replaced. At the same time, only business-relevant historical data was to be migrated into the new system, requiring highly precise data selection and transformation processes.
In addition, the project timeline was extremely ambitious. The migration had to be completed within a very short timeframe while limiting operational downtime to a maximum of 72 hours. Furthermore, the transformation was international in scope, affecting multiple sales organizations that needed to be transitioned in carefully coordinated migration waves. This required meticulous planning, high data quality standards, and seamless coordination among all stakeholders involved.
End-to-end tool-based migration support
To execute the transformation, Natuvion implemented a holistic, tool-driven migration approach. During the initial assessment phase, DCS Analyze was used to rapidly and accurately assess the existing data landscape and identify migration-relevant datasets. Based on these insights, detailed mapping rules were developed to support the transfer of data into the new SAP S/4HANA environment.
The actual migration was carried out using DCS Migrate, which automated the extraction, transformation, and loading of data into the target system landscape. Multiple testing cycles, including a full dress rehearsal, ensured consistent data quality and system functionality throughout the project.
To minimize system downtime, Near Zero Downtime methodologies were applied. In addition, DCS Watch supported cutover management by providing full transparency into all project-related activities and enabling rapid responses to potential deviations. This structured and highly automated approach significantly reduced project effort while simultaneously increasing the efficiency and quality of the overall transformation.
Successful migration and a future-ready system landscape
BMW Group successfully completed the first migration wave and transferred all relevant historical data from the German SAP ECC system into the new SAP S/4HANA environment. The go-live was delivered on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with the stringent requirements for minimal downtime.
With its new system landscape, the company now benefits from a powerful and flexible platform that enables more efficient process design and faster responsiveness to evolving market demands. At the same time, the project establishes the foundation for additional international migration waves and future transformation initiatives across the BMW Group.
