Objective
Energie SaarLorLux pursued the clear objective of fully integrating its previously outsourced supplier-side energy data management processes into its own system landscape. The primary focus was the implementation of an SAP EDM solution within the existing SAP IS-U environment, enabling the efficient and end-to-end execution of all supplier market processes – ranging from interval meter data management and MaBiS processes to market communication.
In parallel with the technical implementation, the project also aimed to establish internal expertise, enabling the organization to independently operate, maintain, and further develop the processes in the future.

Detailed project overview
Complex system transformation under real market conditions
The initial project situation was characterized by several highly complex factors. In addition to the rapidly evolving energy market environment and the resulting time pressure, the complete transition of all EDM-related processes had to be executed precisely in line with the expiration of the existing service provider agreement.
At the same time, the project required the complete greenfield implementation of an SAP EDM system as well as the migration of extensive data volumes from external systems. Due to the previous outsourcing model, the organization lacked the necessary in-house business and system expertise, further increasing the complexity of the implementation. Furthermore, the technical deployment and organizational capability building had to be carried out simultaneously.
Achieving the target step by step – technically and organizationally
To ensure successful delivery, Natuvion applied an agile project methodology with clearly defined milestones and incremental delivery phases. This approach enabled the parallel progression of both the technical implementation and the internal knowledge build-up.
From a technical perspective, the project included the implementation of market communication processes, the integration of required master data structures, and the migration of all relevant master and transactional data into the new SAP EDM environment. In addition, reporting functionalities were developed to support the business departments in day-to-day operations.
At the same time, a strong focus was placed on building internal competencies. Sustainable knowledge transfer was ensured through targeted training sessions, detailed documentation, and comprehensive test scenarios. Close collaboration and short communication paths among all stakeholders enabled rapid decision-making and accelerated project execution.
The implementation was intentionally designed close to the SAP standard in order to minimize future maintenance efforts and simplify upcoming transformation initiatives.
Seamless transition of supplier market processes at cutover
Thanks to the structured project approach, a seamless transition of all supplier-side market processes was successfully achieved at the defined cutover date. The migration – including large-scale datasets such as millions of interval meter records – was completed successfully and without interruption to ongoing business operations.
At the same time, a high-performing internal EDM competency team was established, enabling the organization to independently manage and operate the processes going forward. Integration into the existing IT landscape now allows centralized and holistic control of all market processes through the company’s own SAP EDM platform.
Shortly after go-live, significant improvements became visible, including increased process efficiency, enhanced data quality, and optimized workflows in clearing and receivables management. Overall, the project was delivered successfully within the planned timeline and budget, providing a strong foundation for future optimizations and follow-up initiatives.
Since the go-live, the supplier-side EDM processes are significantly improved. Strong evidence suggests that bringing these processes back into the organization was the right decision. With Natuvion at our side, this turned out to be a worry-free project within the given timeframe and budget.
