The Goal

Wiener Linien wanted to modernize its SAP landscape in good time before the upcoming end of maintenance for SAP ECC. The transition to SAP S/4HANA was intended to create a future-ready foundation, protect sensitive data and affect ongoing operations as little as possible. At the same time, the migration had to fit the audit closing cycle. Together with WienIT as general contractor and Natuvion as specialists in technical data migration, the company developed a clear roadmap for this.

The Project in Detail

High requirements, a clear timeframe

For Wiener Linien, the transition was more than a technical update. Millions of business-critical data records had to reach the new environment reliably. Data protection, data integrity and operations that were as stable as possible had the highest priority. Particularly challenging: WienIT was not permitted to access real customer data. At the same time, the deadline was fixed – the transformation had to be completed by the first quarter of 2025.

Wiener Linien, WienIT and Natuvion managed the project together. Weekly coordination meetings, a real-time dashboard and clearly allocated tasks made progress and risks transparent. This enabled the partners to make decisions quickly and respond to challenges.

First anonymize and test, then migrate

The team developed the migration specification together with Wiener Linien and decided on a Selective Data Transition with a mix-and-match approach. The relevant data was to be selectively moved to SAP S/4HANA in three waves.

As part of the preparation, DCS Protect automatically identified and anonymized personal data. This enabled realistic tests without disclosing real customer data. In parallel, DCS Migrate was configured for the data transfer.

Seven iterative test migrations helped identify errors early and improve the process step by step. Comprehensive defect tracking ensured that open issues remained in view. During the production transition, DCS Migrate automated large parts of the migration and reduced the effort by around 70%. An extended hypercare phase provided by WienIT and Natuvion subsequently supported stable operations.

18 hours gained – and the future in view

The go-live was completed after 54 hours. Compared with the planned 72 hours, downtime was thus reduced by a quarter. The quality was also convincing: across all three migration waves, there were fewer than ten error messages in total, which could be resolved quickly.

Today, Wiener Linien benefits from a modern SAP S/4HANA environment. A new user interface makes day-to-day work easier, while central processes in purchasing, materials management and controlling run faster. Together, the partners are already examining further expansion stages and the migration of additional systems.
